A loft hatch is the weakest point in an insulated ceiling. A standard hatch dropped into a non-standard opening leaves a gap, and that gap carries warm air into the loft for the life of the building. This one is made to the size you give us, so there is nothing to pack out and nothing to make good.
Maximum size 1100 × 950mm. Handmade in the UK.
Specification
- Insulation — 50mm mineral wool. U-value 0.32 W/m²K.
- Airtightness — tested at 0.23 m³/m/hr at 50 Pa [insert test report ref].
- Door and frame — 1mm Zintec steel, powder coated in 20% white gloss (RAL 9010).
- Ceiling protrusion — 7mm. Hinges and fixings are concealed.
- Depth above the ceiling — 63mm standard; 30mm where either dimension is under 450mm.
- Weight — approximately 6-12kg.
- Insulation environmental data — zero GWP, CFC and HCFC free.
Both lock types run a cam that pulls the door onto the seal as it closes, which is what the airtightness figure depends on.
How to measure
Measure the distance between your ceiling joists in millimetres and deduct 5mm. That is the size to order. The 5mm takes up the out-of-square you get in almost every opening.
The outer frame then sits on the ceiling and adds 25mm on every side, or 50mm if you choose the wider frame option. All four sides are the same width — the frame cannot be made wider on one side than another.
Locks
- Tri-Drive — the standard fitting. An O-ring seal at the lock gives the tightest closure, and the opening pole is supplied free.
- Key lockable — for lofts that need to be secured. The opening pole cannot be used with this lock.
If the hinge side is longer than 750mm, specify two locks. A single lock on a long door leaves the far corner of the seal under less pressure than the rest.
Options
- 50mm frame — a wider face, useful where the ceiling around the opening is damaged or where you want more cover over an untidy edge.
- Silver insulation cover — a faced cover over the mineral wool. Supplied uncovered as standard.

Fitting
Fixings and step-by-step instructions are in the box. The frame screws into the surrounding timber.
The door sits slightly proud on the lock side when new. That is the seal under compression, and it settles back over the first few months.

Is this fire rated?
No. The SDS is an insulated, air-tested hatch and carries no fire rating. If the ceiling forms part of a compartment — a loft conversion, a flat, anything where building control is looking at compartmentation — you need a rated hatch instead. We make those to size as well: SDS-FR, 1 hour, up to 900 × 600mm, and SDS-FR-OS-90, 90 minutes, up to 900 × 900mm.

I was undecided between getting a joiner to make a wooden hatch from scratch or go for a made to measure one from Jupiter Blue... After consideration I went for the Jupiter Blue option and am very glad I did! Not being able to visit their showroom prior to placing an order the main concern I had was the weight of the hatch, being made from metal. However, once it arrived I was very impressed with how light it is. Unpacking the hatch revealed custom polystyrene packaging along with a pack of 8 screws (there are 12 holes in the hatch frame to secure it to the ceiling beams), a pole and some installation instructions. Installation (with the help of an additional pair of hands) was nice and simple. We used some G cramps (with scrap wood to protect the surface of the frame) to hold the frame in place while we drilled and secured the frame in-place. Before installation the frame has a fair amount of play in it; care needs to be taken in terms of the order in which you secure the frame attachment points as it is easy to pull the frame out of shape and hence the door then will not align as well as prior to installation. The hinges have a bit of float in them, but it's definitely advisable to take note of my above comment.

Ordered a made to measure loft hatch as I didn't want to mess around adjusting the size of the hole in my ceiling. When it arrived the size was spot on and it was a doddle to fit, just had to cut a slot in the joist to enable the lock catch to turn fully. The hatch is a good tight fit and is a good looking, quality bit of kit although I did use better screws than those supplied.

The made to measure loft access door worked perfectly for me. A minor problem is that the catch doesn't turn fully through 90 degrees when the frame is fairly tight against the surrounding wood because it's not wide enough, but it's not a real issue, I didn't include the Aluminium cloth insulation cover (£8.50 extra) but I would recommend adding this. Perhaps it shouldn't be an extra? I recommend this product strongly.

I had slight concerns about this fitting, but it is pretty much perfect. Produce looks good and although slightly expensive, getting a bespoke fitting is bound to cost more. I would recommend it.

Was a bit concerned about ordering on-line and possible damage in transit, but needn't have been as was very well packed. Delivered on time. Super easy to fit. Nicely finish product and very discreet when fitted. Came with fixings too.

A great product that fitted perfectly even though the hole wasn't entirely square. I was able to fit it on my own with some difficulty. 3 months on it still looks great and beats the old draughty piece of hardboard that was there previously.

Excellent product in just about every way. Good construction with standard lock and added insulation. Pretty easy to install but you do need a second pair of hands to take the weight. Screws supplied and it fits extremely well. Ordered the wider edging to cover poor plastering. Will order another soon. Well done for delivery and timescale.
