The difference between an access ladder and a portable one is permanence: an access ladder is fixed to the building, so it's there whenever it's needed and gives a stable, repeatable climbing route. That makes it the right choice wherever a space is accessed regularly — a loft used for storage, a plant room, or a roof that needs routine maintenance. Weight ratings and safety standards
Our ladders are rated for typical loads — up to 150kg or more for domestic use — and manufactured to recognised safety standards such as EN 14975 for loft ladders. Heavier commercial ladders go further: the Zedfold roof access ladder, for example, conforms to DIN 4570 with a 200kg capacity. Ratings and certifications vary by model, so it's always worth checking the product's technical spec sheet for the precise figures before you buy.
Sizing and modifications
Most loft and roof spaces can take an access ladder, but suitability depends on the ceiling height, structural supports, available clearance and the type of hatch or opening. Before choosing, measure the floor-to-loft height, the hatch size and the overhead clearance — and if in doubt, send us your dimensions and we'll help you pick the right ladder. Our residential ladders come in a range of standard sizes rather than fully bespoke, but a choice of ladder accessories — extension pieces, handrails and support wall treads — lets you adapt one to a specific setup. Certain commercial ladders are custom-made to order.
