The hinged loft hatch, and why the design works

Most of our standard hatches use a hinged door — attached to the frame along the short side — that simply drops down when you open it. It's a design with three practical advantages: you can open it from the floor with a pole (no climbing on a chair or steps); the door swings clear and stays out of the way while you get into the loft; and, because the hinge acts as a pivot, the closed and locked door presses firmly against the foam seal to keep draughts out. They come in a smooth white finish that needs no painting or decorating.

Insulation and Part L

Every Jupiter Blue loft hatch is insulated, with foam seals between the frame and door to cut draughts. How much insulation varies by model — our budget hatches have 35mm, and the exact thermal performance (U-value) is listed on each product, where a lower U-value means the hatch holds heat in better. If you need to meet or exceed Part L of the Building Regulations, we have a range of push-up and hinged hatches built to do exactly that. The right level depends on your ceiling depth and thermal requirements — get in touch if you'd like a hand.

Loft hatch sizes and measuring

Standard-range hatches are sized to fit between joists at 600mm centres. To choose, measure your structural opening (joist to joist and trimmer to trimmer), check the hatch is specified to fit it, and allow enough clearance for a drop-down door to swing open.

Opening Sizes (mm) Suits
Small / compact 536 x 536, 550 x 550 Older properties and tight joist spacing
Standard 560 x 640, 562 x 722, 560 x 760 Most UK homes with 600mm joist centres
Square 600 x 600 Square openings
Large 555 x 800, 600 x 900 Easier access for boarding and storage
Any other size Made to measure Non-standard openings

If your opening is a different size, our made-to-measure loft hatches are built to your exact dimensions.

Replacing an old loft hatch

Most replacements are a straight swap. Measure the structural opening rather than the old frame, choose a hatch specified for that opening, and the new frame fits inside it. If your opening is an unusual size, a made-to-measure hatch avoids altering the joists. Every hatch comes with step-by-step fitting instructions.

The full range

Alongside the standard models, the range covers plastic and steel (metal) hatches, highly insulated and air-tested models, fire-rated loft hatches, loft hatches with an integrated ladder, and bespoke insulated hatches for non-standard openings. Not sure whether plastic or steel suits you? Our guide Plastic or steel loft hatch? compares the two. Nobody in the UK makes and sells more loft hatches than us — buying direct means a quality product at a competitive price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a fire-rated loft hatch?
Certain properties need one to comply with Building Regulations — as a rule of thumb, homes of three or more storeys require a fire-rated loft hatch, and there are other cases where fire separation is specified. If in doubt, check the building specification or with Building Control, and see our fire-rated loft hatch range for the tested options.
Which loft hatch insulation should I choose, and do they meet Part L?
Every hatch we sell is insulated, but the level varies — our budget models have 35mm, and each product lists its U-value (lower is better). The right choice depends on your ceiling depth and thermal requirements; if you need to meet or exceed Part L of the Building Regulations, we have push-up and hinged hatches built specifically to do so. Ask our team if you'd like help picking.
What size is a standard loft hatch in the UK?
There isn't one fixed size, but most UK loft hatches suit an opening of around 560mm wide by 720–760mm long, designed to fit between joists at 600mm centres. Compact hatches of around 550 x 550mm suit older properties with tighter joist spacing, and larger 600 x 900mm hatches make it easier to get boarding and storage boxes into the loft. If your opening isn't a standard size, we make loft hatches to measure, built to your exact structural opening for a neat, well-sealed fit.
What guarantee comes with a loft hatch?
All Jupiter Blue loft hatches, including the standard models, come with a 2-year guarantee — so if something goes wrong due to a manufacturing fault, it'll be repaired or replaced. Full details come with each product.
Can I replace a loft hatch myself?
Yes, in most cases it's a straightforward job. Measure the structural opening rather than the old frame, remove the old hatch and frame, and fit the new frame into the opening. Every hatch comes with step-by-step fitting instructions and no specialist tools are needed. If your property needs a fire-rated hatch, typically homes of three or more storeys, or you need to meet Part L, make sure the replacement is rated for it.
Do you sell loft hatches with a ladder?
Yes. Our integrated loft hatch and ladder systems combine an insulated hatch and a folding ladder in one unit, including fire-rated versions. If you only need a ladder for an existing hatch, we also sell loft ladders on their own.
