Access panels, are used for hiding and protecting building services such as pipes, cables, ducts, flues and valves. Offering fast access for inspection and maintenance without any mess or disruption. A typical access panel comprises a frame and a hinged door with a lock to secure the door. The structure of all access panels will be made from either plastic or metal (steel). Access panels are also sometimes referred to as access hatches.
There are some cases where it’s a legal obligation to fit access panels. One example is for the inspection of hidden gas boiler flues which need to be inspected to check for leaks. Beyond this access panels are used to conceal building services, for protection and sometimes purely for aesthetic reasons.
Access panels are designed to open quickly, the vast majority are supplied with a key operated lock. To open, turn the key and pull the door towards you. The two exceptions to this are plastic access panels or touch latch access panels which are simply press to release the door catch. Locking options are described in more detail in individual product descriptions.
There’s a lot of choice so to keep things as simple as possible split your choice between Fire Rated, or non-fire rated, and whether a standard size, or bespoke size is needed.

Sometimes the easiest questions are the hardest to answer. In most cases building regulations or building specifications will confirm whether fire rated products are required. In addition they will also list details about the individual product specifications, such as duration and direction of fire test. There are numerous factors in deciding whether a fire rated access panel is required including building type and designated use. If you are unsure whether you need a fire rated access panel, you can either check with your local building control or refer to the building specification.

Please note, not all standard products are offered in every size, e.g. a 100 x 150 is only offered in plastic to maximise the clear opening. Likewise, the largest size access panels have to be made from steel due to its excellent strength and rigidity.

The image below shows the dimensions which the size is based on. We recommend allowing approximately 5mm over this size when fitting. E.g. a create a structural opening (hole) of 605 x 605mm when fitting a 600 x 600mm access panel. You’ll find each product listing has detailed information about the sizes available.
